Alan Kirschenbaum, a successful writer of television sitcoms but also a friend of harness racing, breeding, owning and training scores of horses over the years, died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 51.

He also worked as a commentator on several Breeders Crown telecasts and reported on major races for publications like The Horseman And Fair World before moving to California to pursue a career as a comedy writer. Kirschenbaum co-created two comedy series for CBS, Yes, Dear and the upcoming Friend Me, as well as the 2007 pilot Fugly. He also worked on the CBS comedies Everybody Loves Raymond, Center Of The Universe and Accidentally On Purpose.

Two of his most successful horses were Little Steven and Sugar Glider, who was trained by George Berkner, who Alan once worked for during his days as a horseman. He was also an active advocate for harness racing as a board member of the California Harness Horsemen's Association.

He is survived by wife Vicki, daughter Molly, sister Judi, mother Ethel and his father, comedian Freddie Roman.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Alan Kirschenbaum.
