Alan Kirschenbaum Passes

Alan Kirschenbaum, a successful writer of television sitcoms but also a friend of harness racing, breeding, owning and training scores of horses over the years, died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 51.

He also worked as a commentator on several Breeders Crown telecasts and reported on major races for publications like The Horseman And Fair World before moving to California to pursue a career as a comedy writer. Kirschenbaum co-created two comedy series for CBS, Yes, Dear and the upcoming Friend Me, as well as the 2007 pilot Fugly. He also worked on the CBS comedies Everybody Loves Raymond, Center Of The Universe and Accidentally On Purpose.

Two of his most successful horses were Little Steven and Sugar Glider, who was trained by George Berkner, who Alan once worked for during his days as a horseman. He was also an active advocate for harness racing as a board member of the California Harness Horsemen's Association.

He is survived by wife Vicki, daughter Molly, sister Judi, mother Ethel and his father, comedian Freddie Roman.

Sorry to hear the sad news about Alan. He was a genuine harness horse enthusiast with a tremendous memory and knowledge of our sport. His influence will be missed. My condolences to his family.

our condolences go out to Alans family... We met Alan in the early 80's at Pompano Park in his early days of grooming. such a nice young man.

I am saddened to learn of Mr.Kirschenbaum's passing. He was a very decent man and was always a gentleman. Truly a friend to man and horse.

Though I never had the chance to meet him personally, I have appreciated Alan's contributions to Harness Racing. He always kept his sense of humor, quick wit and positive attitude close to his very serious and long-time love for the sport. Sincere condolences to Vicki, Molly and family, and Alan's many friends throughout the sports and entertainment world.
