Trot Insider has learned that 16-year-old King Conch horse Ashanti 4,1:55.2s ($202,446) has passed away.

Out of the Balanced Image mare Miss Trillium, Ashanti made 96 starts over his seven-year career. The $55,000 yearling purchase went on to bank over $202,000 in purse earnings and rack up 17 wins, seven second-place finishes and 14 thirds.

The bay was conditioned by Ron Waples, Dave Tingley, Darren McCall and Randy Ertel over the course of his career. His last career start came in August of 2007 at Grand River Raceway where he went straight to the top and made every pole a winning one before nailing the wire three quarters of one length the best.

Ashanti was living out his life at Willow Broke farm near Freelton, Ont. where he suffered a paddock accident.

It was a pleasure to meet and be around Ashanti over the last year.
He was a beautiful boy and a gentleman to deal with.

My condolences to his caregiver. He will be sadly missed.

Rest In Peace Big Boy.
