PETA Takes Aim At NYC Carriages

After taking dead-aim on the thoroughbred racing industry after the tragic breakdown of filly Eight Belles during the 2008 Kentucky Derby, PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has now shifted its focus to the horse-drawn carriage industry.

An article today on ecorazzi.com states that celebrities Kristen Johnson, Alec Baldwin, Pink and Chrissie Hynde are supporting a PETA initiative to stop the horse-drawn carriage industry in New York City.

The ecorazzi.com article states that an advertising campaign will begin in New York City tomorrow.

“I was blown away by how these horses live, or actually I should say, don’t live," Johnston was quoted as saying. “The horses go from this horrible job, where they’re pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day, to this tiny jail cell in this building that’s like a cramped parking garage. I’d say to tourists considering coming to New York, there’s so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. Go ice-skating, see a show, go shopping. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages.”

Its not PETA thats the problem, as much as I do find them annoying at times.

Perhaps instead of stating that they want to eliminate this feature in NYC, I do not believe the entire industry itself is a bad thing. I've taken horse drawn carriage rides before and they are quite enjoyable, but I also know the barn that own them take very good care of their horses. Perhaps instead of eliminating the industry, which would likely mean the end of the line for several of these horses, eliminate the bad owners/operators.

Instead of taking aim at the various horse relat3d industries, why don't the "celebrities" spend their time and money where it is really needed. Homelessness, unemploymnet, child abuse, drug abouse, stopping the sexual exploitation of children?. I am growing extremely tired of hearing how badly horses are abudes and treated, and how terrible "racing" people are. PETA should step back and consider the fact that the horses are our livlihood, without them we so not get paaid. If the horses are treated so terribly they would not try, or they get "sour". When that happens, the people involved do NOT GET PAID!!. Most of the horses that I know are treated better then our children, and certainly alot better then the children features on the news everyday.
But as the adage goes... "kick your child and noone wants to get involved; kcik your dog and everyone wants to string you up" The lack of consideration for the children is certainly demonstrated in their lack of consideration of others in later life.
Maybe PETA should think about that!!

The problem with the PETA weirdos is that they speak of the tasks that ANIMALS are asked to perform as if they were being forced upon HUMANS! ("Horrible job, pulling people through the streets, then to this tiny jail cell...) What do you want them to do? They're (expletive) HORSES! Maybe, instead, the poor horses should go get their nails done and have a tan, then hunker down in one of six-figure apartments in Manhattan. Get a grip, people! What's next? Get rid of cars because they runover squirrels?

Come on now can't these people get a life those horses and same with our horses are treated like kings. And I am sure they enjoy the work, fresh bed all the food they can handle.Heck half of the humans in this world would kill to be treated like them. Just a thought.

That's another reason we need to moderate whipping in harness racing like Pompano did, and good on them.
