Heart And Soul Sets Summerside Record

Heart And Soul, owned by George and Earith Riley of Kensington, P.E.I., established a new track record for two-year-old colts and geldings, stopping the timer in 1:56.2 for driver/trainer Clare MacDonald on Sunday at Red Shores Summerside.

The record breaking mile took place in a $10,200 gold division of the Joe O’Brien Memorial in race 12. The Western Paradise gelding picked up his fourth victory from six starts. The previous record of 1:57.2 was held by Forever Paradise and set on August 22, 2012.

The other gold O’Brien stake went to the Camystic gelding K D Overdrive and Gilles Barrieau in 1:57.4 for trainer Stephen Mason and the Downey Stables.

The top performers in the O’Brien grassroots divisions were Howmacsblackjack (Earl Smith, 2:00.4), Rosewood (Kenny Arsenault, 2:01.1), J J Jodster (Marc Campbell, 1:59) and Windemere Rene (Campbell, 2:01.3).

The Lady Slipper gold stakes, for $11,000 each, went to Amirightorwrong (Scott Hubbard) in 2:02 while Dixie Lullaby (Todd Trites) won her assignment in 1:58.2.

Also taking top honours in the $5,500 Lady Slipper grassroots were Every Time (Mark Bradley, 2:00.3), R Es Miss Amy, (Barrieau, 2:02.3), Riverboat Dancer (Mike Stevenson, 2:01).

Gilles Barrieau had a driving triple putting his lifetime total after the weekend at 4,003. Campbell had a driving double while trainer Earl Watts recorded two victories from his stable.
