According to an article by The Journal Pioneer, both the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre and Summerside Raceway will be sporting different handles in the near future

.

The Atlantic Lottery Corp. has stated that CDPEC will be renamed Red Shores Racetrack and Casino, while Summerside Raceway will become Red Shores at Summerside.

“We think [the name Red Shores] embodies the essence of the Island and celebrates the contribution of harness racing,” Tracy Kenney of ALC was quoted as saying.

If this change goes through my poor grandfather Jack Ladner, a harness racing pioneer on PEI will jump out of his grave to complain. The CDP is famous all over the harness racing world. Someone out there had better realize that they are making a huge mistake.

I AM THE 4TH GENERATION IN OUR FAMILY TO RACE HORSES ON PEI. WE HAVE BEEN RACING FOR
OVER 50 YEARS AT THE CDP AND SRW.THESE ARE BOTH HISTORICAL PLACES AND I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME UNDERSTAND WHY EITHER OF THESE RACETRACKS NEED A NEW NAME.IT CERTAINLY ISN'T GOING TO ADD ANYTHING TO RACING SO LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE!!!!

To the individual or group of individuals that nodded their head(s) in acceptance of this new dull and sleepy Red Shores lingo I need to ask: "What were you thinking?!!" "Red Shores Racetrack and Casino"...by gor it almost makes ya wanna jump up and...go back to bed!! And pray tell will the month of August now be hi-lited by the annual running of the...White Clam and Bucket?

we all know what happened a few years ago when atlantic lotto took over harness racing in the maritimes - they pretty near put us out of business- unilateral name changes seems like another try- can we stand more of this?

Surely the PEIHRIA & the Minister responsible will not stand by while a supposedly "marketing specialist" with ALC obliterates our historical past.
A co-operative working arrangement with ALC is imperative for the future of harness racing, but,if we allow ourselves to be "dictated to" in this manner, it may only be the tip of the iceberg. A co-operative arrangement will work , a dictatorial one will not.

You probably saw Wes Sheridan on Compass these evening defending the decision to change the name. He said its what tourists want. Can somebody please tell him that the majority of those polled on this website are tourists when they come to PEI during Old Home Week! He made it sound like Harness Racing PEI executive were on board!!! How long will it be before the Gold Cup and Saucer is changed to Atlantic Loto Red Shores Cup?

I'm not sure if I find a bad name change as up setting as a bad business plan for harness racing however lets hope we don't get both!!! I believe the involvment of ALC in the sport in the Maritimes has brought many positive changes with more to follow, (but) someone needs to define their mandate so they know when they have crossed the line.

The Summmerside Raceway has three major players HRPEI operates the Racing componet, The Prince County Horsemans Club operates the entire backstretch and Stable area and the city owns the entire complex, all leased to the above mentioned parties. ALC operates the Racino!!!!! Now they could name the racino (within their mandate) whatever they choose, but anything other than that is just away over the line.

Sounds like we are going to get two new campgrounds on PEI - Whatever happened to "tradition" in this sport ? A L C Cup - Hummm ? or should I say Ho-Hummm

This is a new low for ALC, Both Charlottetown and Summerside tracks are know world wide as the CDP (CDPEC) and SRW. leave well enough alone. hope the horsemen will stop this from happening, ALC is nothing but trouble whats next.

It would be a travesty to have the name changed. A 100 years of history would be erasesed. I hope the Prince Edward Island community will rise to the challenge and protest this attempt to obliterate history.

Bad decision. The history of Harness Racing in the Maritimes has been associated with these 2 tracks and to change the name is to dishonour the history. These tracks have a historical significance and as such should be treated accordingly. Citing the Gold Cup and Saucer and the Governors Cup it goes hand in hand with these 2 tracks. To change the name would be the same as taking away the "historicl designation" of the establishments hint - hint. The people of Prince
Edward Island should be up in arms about this slight to their heritage. Should we throw away possibly 100 plus years of history for a new name? Get off your butts P.E. I. and do something about it.

I AM SURE THERE WILL BE A REVOLT IN BOTH CHARLOTTETOWN AND SUMMERSIDE AND MONCTON HEAD OFFICE LIKE ALC HAS NEVER SEEN . THE NAME CHANGE IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

Bad decision. ALC has completely taken over racing which is not good. Let the people that know racing, run racing. What's next, change the Gold Cup & Saucer to the A.L.C Cup? I hope horsemen stand up to the ALC and demand that the tracks remain the same.
