This past Sunday (December 3), 12 horses perished during a late-night barn fire that investigators have deemed as being ‘suspicious.’

The aftermath of the deadly blaze at the at the Elmwood Equestrian Centre

According to an article by the BBC, 12 of the 70 horses that were stabled at the Elmwood Equestrian Centre, which is located in Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, England, lost their lives in the blaze. Another outlet has reported the toll as being 15.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at roughly 11:30 p.m. Passer-bys tried their hardest to save some of the horses, but could not save all of them.

According to the BBC, David Shaw, who has been identified as a business partner of one of the centre’s owners, has said that the situation has left him feeling “gutted.”

An investigation into the fatal fire is currently underway.
