It has been reported that representatives from the Province of Quebec recently met with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake "in the first formal meeting specifically on gaming" in more than a decade

.

A report by the Montreal Gazette explains that the proclamation of the gaming meeting came via a posting on the website of Continent 8 Technologies, which, according to its website, provides companies with a facility from which to host their online operations.

According to the Montreal Gazette, Kahnawake Chief John Dee Delormier has described a September 20 meeting with four government representatives as preliminary and exploratory. Kahnawake, a 48-square-kilometre reservation located south of Montreal, is home to Mohawk Internet Technologies (MIT), which hosts many of the world's leading online gaming operations.

According to the article, Delormier said that the Quebec reps were taken on a tour of MIT and that there was talk of including Quebec gambling regulators in the next meeting. A date for the next meeting was not divulged.

The report states that the office of Pierre Corbeil, the provincial minister responsible for aboriginal affairs, has cast a different light on the September 20 meeting. Spokeswoman Helene Sauvageau said the meeting was held to discuss existing sectoral agreements that relate to such things as economic development and transportation.
