2011 Yearling Issue

By Tammy McNiven

There has been lots of racing action across the country over the last several weeks. What an exciting time of year. This is what we have been waiting for!

The SC board will be meeting at the end of the month to discuss finances from the first eight months of the fiscal year. Again, the trends are continuing — we are seeing decreased memberships and eligibilities. We are facing the long-building crisis of an aging membership base, fewer breedings, and fewer participants today than in years past. The Board of Directors, of course, will be charged with helping to direct management to draft an appropriate budget with these factors in mind.

The Board also has a new Director, Jamie Martin, representing Racetracks in Ontario. Jamie replaces Chris Roberts, who left to take on his new role at Northlands Park back in June. As Woodbine Entertainment Group’s Senior Vice President of Racing, Jamie brings plenty experience to the Board. Welcome Jamie!

This month I have asked Carole Dunbar from Saskatchewan to give a brief update on racing in her province.

Both Cornerstone Raceway at Yorkton and the Manitoba fair circuit began on the June 17 weekend. We race 16 days at Yorkton and then four days at West Meadows Raceway at Regina. The Saskatchewan Standardbred Horseman’s Association, along with both tracks, this year purchased a tote board that will be used at both venues. This is something they have wanted for several years!

Exciting news Carole!

Happy racing!
