Fee Notes:

As a courtesy, the OSS Administration will make every effort to advise nominators of future sustaining payments but it is the responsibility of the owner of the eligible colt, filly or gelding to ensure that future sustaining payments are made whether or not a notice has been received. Failure to make a payment when due constitutes automatic withdrawal from racing in the stakes events of that year.
It is recommended that payments be sent by registered mail.

Nomination and sustaining payments can be paid to the Ontario Sires Stakes directly or by Interac (debit) or credit card through SC Stakes Online by clicking here.

Conditions:

Ontario Racing (OR), as Program Administrator, reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to make any adjustments, changes or cancellations as deemed required. By participating in the OSS Program, the participants acknowledge and agree that the OR will not be held liable for any costs associated with any changes to the OSS Program.

Eligibility:
Yearlings conceived as the result of a mating between a mare in the Northern Hemisphere and a stallion that stood the entire Northern Hemisphere breeding season in Ontario, providing that the stallion was duly registered with the Ontario Sires Stakes Program for the appropriate breeding season, can be nominated to the Ontario Sires Stakes if they meet the following requirements.

a) The nominated yearling must be registered with Standardbred Canada or the United States Trotting Association at the time of nomination. Any foal registered with the USTA that does not meet the registry requirements set out by Standardbred Canada shall not be eligible to be nominated to the OSS. Yearlings registered off the continent of North America may be accepted on an individual basis provided a copy of the home country registration certificate accompanies the nomination fee.

b) The OSS will not recognize foals as twins if produced through embryo/ovum transfer. If such foals were produced through embryo/ovum transfer, only the donor mare’s first born foal, registered with either Standardbred Canada or the USTA, will be eligible for nomination.

c) Foals conceived from frozen semen will be eligible to the OSS program only if the semen was collected and frozen in Ontario and is from a stallion that was registered for the OSS program both at the time of collection and when the mare was inseminated. The semen must have been obtained through the OSS registered owner, lessee or Syndicate.

Starting Fee:
The starting fee is due in accordance with Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) rules in effect at race time, but in any event, it must be paid before the horse starts.
Trainers and/or owners are responsible for verifying declaration times at each track. These times will be strictly adhered to.

Money Division:
5 or more starters: 50-25-12-8-5%; 4 starters: 50-25-15-10%; 3 starters: 60-30-10%; 2 starters: 65-35%; 1 starter: 100%.

Gait:
Any eligible filly, colt or gelding, changing gait after the sustaining payment in either year, will be eligible to race at the gait adopted.

Currency:
All amounts mentioned above are in Canadian funds.

Racing Conditions:
All OSS races shall be conducted in accordance with the AGCO Rules of Standardbred Racing and individual track rules approved by the AGCO. Racetrack retention barn rules may apply. All participants are strongly advised to make themselves familiar with rules specifically related to the OSS.

Each of the events shall be raced at a distance of one mile.

Horses sustained to the OSS program may be subject to testing under the Out Of Competition Program.

Gold and Grassroots events are numbered 1 through 5 and horses are eligible to be entered in EITHER the Gold OR Grassroots event of the same number, but NOT BOTH.

GOLD SERIES
Gold Series will consist of forty (40) Gold legs, 5 events for each of the 8 categories for age/sex/gait.

If more horses declare to start in an event than is permitted at that track, the event shall be split into the appropriate number of divisions with entries seeded by lot.

As noted above, Gold and Grassroots Series events will be numbered and horses cannot be entered in a Gold and a Grassroots event of the same number.

Horses will earn points in each of the Gold Legs to qualify for their Gold Super Final.

In 2018, the HIP will contribute $180,000 to each Gold Leg to be divided evenly between the number of divisions required for that event. Starting fees will then be added directly to the purse. If only one division is required, the HIP contribution will be $117,000 plus Starting Fees. Because of the large percentage of pacing yearlings nominated to the Program in 2017, if 2-Year-Old Pacing Gold Legs require 4 or more divisions, funds are available for the SIP contribution to be increased to $200,000 for two events for colts and two events for fillies.

The Starting Fee for all Gold Legs will be $800.

The purse for the Gold Super Final will be $225,000. There will be no Starting Fee for the Gold Super Final.

GRASSROOTS SERIES
There will be five Grassroots legs in each of the eight categories for age, sex and gait.

If more horses declare to start in an event than is permitted at that track, the event shall be split into the appropriate number of divisions with entries seeded by lot.

As noted above, Gold and Grassroots Series events will be numbered and horses cannot be entered in a Gold and a Grassroots event of the same number

Horses will earn points in each of the five Grassroots legs throughout the season to qualify for the Grassroots Semi Final.

In 2018, the HIP contribution to Grassroots divisions will be $16,000 to a maximum of $112K for 2-year-old pacing events (7 divisions); $80K for 3-year-old pacing events (5 divisions) and $48K (3 divisions) for all trotting events. Starting Fees will then be added directly to the purses for each division.

The Starting Fee for all Grassroots divisions will be $350.

Grassroots Semi-Finals have been reinstated and each division will race for a purse of $20,000. Grassroots Championships will have a purse of $50,000.

There will be no Starting Fees for Grassroots Semi-Finals or Championship races.
