Rick Karper SAID...

For those who may not know, Rick Zeron got his nickname by giving away his whip in the winner's circle after every win, in Montreal and there were many. Usually, the whip was given to a youngster or some pretty girl. I still have one of Rick's whips in my living room. It's the first thing that my grand nephews look for when they visit.

Peter Smith SAID...

I always thought Campbell was known as 'The Hall of Famer'? Apart from that, The Chairman of the Board seems perfect.

For Doug Brown, I always preferred 'Downtown Dougie Brown' as his nickname. He was, after all, the king of Downtown in the Greenwood days.

Overall though, BillyO's 'Magic Man' moniker is the best of a very good bunch.

The Master

I'm sure it was John Hayes Sr. who said Keith Waples had "Hands of silk".
The Journal de Montreal dubbed him "The Master of Masters" Rightly so.
Ask Herve Filion who he idolized.

I always thought Joe O'Brien had a great one Jingling Jesus With The Golden Hands he could bring a horse home as good as anybody and never needed a whip.

Re: Keith Waples. My fave line was in Tom Ainslie's Complete Guide to Harness Racing. Tom said he could "drive a sulky through the eye of a needle."

As for other nicks, I was hoping Randy "don't give him the microphone and expect it back" Waples would be up here.

Kidding Randy!

You don't get to be The Magic Man or The Master for nothing!! Hands down the best nicknames.

I don't know where "The Master" came from but for as long as I can remember it was always Keith "The Thief" Waples because of the many races, where he had no chance, that he stole by being the craftiest and probably smartest driver to ever sit on a race bike! I recall many drivers, including Herve Filion saying they learned to drive by watching Keith! I know I watched him and tried some of the moves he made and I still don't know how he did it 'cause they didn't work for me!
BTW there must be something in the genes 'cause I've watched a certain guy from that family named Randy pull some pretty larcenous moves too, for example in a certain Breesder's Crown race last year!

This survey brought out a very interesting question, at least in my mind, and that being "what nickname does John Campbell have"? You would think that one of the greatest drivers of past and present would also have one. Perhaps something like "The Flash" or "The Principal".
