Flamboro Downs will kick off its fall meet tonight (Tuesday, September 2) and four divisions of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots for two-year-old pacing fillies will highlight the card.

Fans will find lots of action early, as the first division (Race 1) will see a match-up of the top two fillies in the division, Chase The Shadows and Wicked Speed, square off side by side. With two wins and two seconds in her OSS career to date, Chase The Shadows is the leading point earner with 150.

A homebred daughter of Shadow Play trained by Dave Menary for owners Ann and Darwin Shaver and Laura Perniciaro of Michigan, Chase The Shadows has drawn Post 7 and Jody Jamieson will drive.

Starting right alongside in Post 6 is Wicked Speed, who has 112 Grassroots points amassed to date from two wins and a third. The daughter of Mach Three is owned by trainer Bob Young of Guelph, Ont. and Status Stables of Massachusetts, and will have Young’s son, Scott, at the controls.

This race also features Lady Jen, who sits fifth in the point standings for the group. She’s drawn the most advantageous post of the trio, with the three spot. Trevor Henry, one of the leading drivers in the OSS this season, will be in the sulky for trainer Scott McEneny and owner Hutt Racing Stable of Pennsylvania. She comes into the race with two wins and a close second in her last three starts.

Hutt Racing also has a starter in the second division (Race 2) in Amazing Control, who will start from the rail with Mike Saftic aboard. A daughter of Shadow Play trained by Jack Darling, the filly is looking for her first lifetime victory. She finished second to Chase The Shadows in her most recent OSS start.

In the third division (Race 5), another of Hutt Racing Stable’s juvenile fillies has drawn Post 1. Sassafras Girl will have the services of Paul MacKenzie for trainer Murray Brethour. With three wins in seven career starts, the daughter of Badlands Hanover currently sits fourth in the point standings.

Following tonight’s races, the fillies have one last Grassroots event left, on September 11 at Mohawk Racetrack, to earn enough points to qualify for the September 18 Semi-Final.

This is the first of five OSS stops at Flamboro Downs this season. The half-mile oval will have the Grassroots back on September 11, this time for three-year-old filly trotters, the three Gold events – the first on September 21 also for the trotting sophomore fillies, the second two days later for two-year-old trotting colts and the final one on September 28 for three-year-old filly pacers.

First-race post time at Flamboro is 6 p.m., with the fillies on display in Race 1, 2, 5 and 8.
