Jack Bernard Passes

Trot Insider has learned that veteran horseman John William ‘Jack’ Bernard of Charlottetown, P.E.I. has passed away at the age of 85.

Bernard competed at various Maritime tracks throughout a long and successful career.

His career highlights include winning the British Consols trophy as leading driver during Charlottetown’s Old Home Week in 1961 and being the leading driver in Fredericton Raceway on multiple occasions.

Among the well-known horses Bernard campaigned were 1998 Atlantic Sires and Maritime Breeders Champions Brookridgegoldstar, Seawind Positano, Rae Bells Best and Blazing Finesse.

Jack is survived by son Kimball Bernard (Sarah), and was a loving grandfather to Kara Bernard. Brother of Wanda Smith and Pearl Crossman. Predeceased by his wife Mildred (MacLeod), his brothers Bob, Willard, Ray, Emmett, Vernon, Sanford and sisters Georgina, Margaret and Bunny.

Bernard is resting at Belvedere Funeral Home (www.belvederefh.com) from where the funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday (Sept. 12) at 10:30 a.m. Interment in the Central Queens United Church Cemetery.
