Standardbred horseman Phillip Martin, 80, of St. Peter, Illinois, passed away on August 17, 2020.

He was married to Sylvia Dianne (Albea) Martin for 59 years.

Martin's children, David and Darla (Martin) Gray Lohman are both involved in harness racing in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

One of the highlights of Phillip’s career was winning a two-year-old Kentucky Sire Stakes race with Winning Walter, beating the world famous Abercrombie. Another fun fact is that Martin and his children all won Kentucky Sire Stakes races as drivers.

Most of Martin's life was spent racing horses, making tack and playing cards. He loved horse racing and spending time with family and friends. He was loved by many and will be missed.

Martin is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son, David (Lori); daughter, Darla (David); grandson, Aaron (Whitney); step-grandsons, Ian Gentry, Stevie Gray, and Dayne (Megan) Lohman; great-step-grandsons, Kamden Lohman and Jamie Gray; sister, Marilyn Sue Davis; brother-in-law, Richard (Beverly) Albea; sisters-in-law, Linda (Conrad) Smith, Dr. Loretta (Stan) Kroin, Jayne (Mike) McCubbins, and Cheri Perrin; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Thelma; sister, Ruth Glasscock; and brothers-in-law, Nemuel Albea and John Perrin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family at P.O. Box 43, St Peter, IL 62880.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Phillip Martin.
