Morrisville State College offers one of the most complete training programs for New York’s next generation of horsepeople through two and four-year degree programs and hands-on learning.
The annual yearling sale held by the college is not only a learning experience in itself for students, but also raises funds to continue supporting this valuable program.
Entries for the Morrisville Yearling Sale on September 20 are now being accepted and consignors can feel confident that they will be supporting the training of students enrolled in both Equine Science and Management and Equine Racing Management programs at the school. Approximately 150 of the 300 students enrolled in Morrisville’s equine programs annually participate in the sale in various roles.
Through one of these courses of study, students concentrate on the breeding, training, nutrition, and management of horses. Students gain skills such as learning how to drive harness horses, stable management, how to problem solve equine training and management challenges, equine reproduction and management, shoeing, breaking yearlings and prepping young horses for sale. Students seriously interested in driving can even participate in a summer internship driving on the county fair circuit.
Graduates of Morrisville’s equine programs are prepared for license exams, able to serve as assistant trainers or grooms in a racing stable, or work in a breeding operation. These students are trained to serve the needs of today’s harness racing industry.
Morrisville’s sale supports the education programs and the learning facilities, which house 250 horses on site and include a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center with therapies ranging from aquatic to solariums, a half-mile racetrack, Eurociser, hot walkers, barns, arenas, and paddocks.
