Racing Remembers Jim Flaherty

As Canadian Heritage today announced the details of a state funeral for former Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, the horse racing world is also mourning his loss.

Flaherty passed away unexpectedly last Thursday at his Ottawa condo after stepping aside from federal politics. Before serving as the Member of Parliament for Whitby–Oshawa, Flaherty was a provincial cabinet minister for Mike Harris in the 1990s. He was part of the Ontario PC government that instituted the Slots at Racetracks program and he was admired and respected by many in the industry.

In his home riding, Flaherty was no stranger to Ajax Downs and its owner, Norm Picov. He frequently demonstrated his fondness and support for the racetrack and the horsepeople in the area.

Canadians are invited to pay their respect to the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Member of Parliament for Whitby–Oshawa and former Finance Minister.

The visitation will take place at the Abilities Centre, 55 Gordon Street, Whitby, on Tuesday, April 15, from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at St. James' Cathedral, 65 Church Street (at King), Toronto.

While usually reserved for current and former governors general, prime ministers and sitting members of cabinet, a state funeral may be offered -- at the discretion of the Prime Minister -- to any prominent Canadian. A similar honour was bestowed upon former NDP leader Jack Layton when he passed away in August 2011.

Flaherty is survived be his wife, Christine Elliott, and their sons, John, Galen and Quinn. Mr. Flaherty's family appreciates all the expressions of support and condolences and asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Abilities Centre.
