Harry G. Farrow Jr., 84, of Harrington, Del., died November 2, 2017, at the Hospice Center of Milford.
He was a former mayor of Harrington and the owner of the Harrington Journal newspaper whose sports section was dominated by harness racing news. More recently Mr. Farrow was a realtor.
Mr. Farrow was a longtime native of Harrington and grew up on the family farm, one of the earlier farms in the town of Harrington. He graduated from Harrington High School where he lettered in varsity basketball. He went on to receive two degrees, one at the University of Georgia and at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a strong American patriot. While in the service, his Signal Corps company was placed on orders three times for Korea, and as a cryptographer, he had top secret clearance for messages sent and received. In the 1960s, he was a loan officer for the Farmers Bank in Dover.
Mr. Farrow was a big part of the Harrington community. He served as mayor from 1987 to 1990. He was the fifth editor and former owner of the Harrington Journal, founded by his uncle in 1913. He also was the founder of the newspaper Raceweek that was dedicated to local and national auto and motorcycle racing affiliations. He remained a freelance writer and occasionally wrote for the Delaware State News. His passion was interviewing and writing about veterans and historical people of interest.
He was also owner of the local realty company, Farrow Realty. At the time of his passing, he worked as a broker/realtor for Lewis Realty in Lewes, Del.
Mr. Farrow was a big supporter of the harness racing industry. Growing up, he had several horses. His love of the sport began at an early age. He could be found at Dover or Harrington covering the harness races every season.
He also was an avid sports fan and made hobbies of baseball, basketball, golf and tennis.
As part of the Harrington Community, he belonged to the Harrington Lions Club, Rotary Club, Burrsville Ruritan, and the St. Stephens Episcopal Church. The love of his community and dedication to his family will be forever missed by his loving family and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Farrow. He is survived by his sons, John "Dave" (Heather) and Christopher "Todd" (Tracey Ann); and grandchildren, Abbagail Kenton, Hannah Howard, and Madelyn.
A memorial service will take place at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 1 p.m. with a visitation starting two hours prior to the service. Interment will be private.
