When it comes to shoeing, it is safe to say that every farrier can relate to the sentiment that, “You can read about it, you can talk about it, but doing it is a different story."
The above quote comes courtesy of west coast horseman Allan Molloy, who recently discussed shoeing during Harness Racing B.C.’s successful open house in the backstretch at Fraser Downs.
Molloy, who owns, trains and drives Standardbreds, is also a lifelong blacksmith. The 32-year-old learned the farrier ways while still a youngster in Australia.
The horseman has been based out of Fraser Downs for the past eight years. He took the opportunity to discuss shoeing during the September 13 open house, which, according to HRBC Executive Director Jackson Wittup, was quite a success.
“I was very happy with the Harness Racing B.C. open house on Saturday, when hundreds of people enjoyed barn tours, harness demos, cart rides, shoeing demos, a craft table, face painting and barbecue,” said Wittup, who also wanted to thank everyone – including the volunteers – that came out and supported the event.
During the shoeing demonstration, Molloy explained that each horse needs specific shoeing. “Every horse has different aspects to her foot,” he said. “It’s just like people.”
