'Charmeleon' Bests Trotting Stablemate

U S Charmeleon left his rivals in the dust as he took off down the stretch to score an open length victory in the $780 Preferred Handicap for both gaits at St. John's Racing & Entertainment Centre on Sunday afternoon

U S Charmeleon and driver Scott MacRoberts took off from post position four forcing the outside starter and last week's winner, Machthemoment (Rod Forward), into the pocket early on. The five-year-old gelded son of High On Emotion-Rapidash Mor then paced away from his four rivals in the stretch to win the afternoon feature by 10 lengths in 2:00.3. The winner's stablemate and only trotter in the field, Abs Yankess Rail (Wayne Williams), came on for second with Machthemoment finishing third.

Trained Kevin McDonald shares ownership of the winner with Amy McDonald of Goulds, Nfld. U S Charmeleon has won three races in 14 starts this year.
