With an eviction order pending, Canada’s oldest racetrack, the 125-year-old Kin Race Track in Vernon, BC, is battling with the courts to prevent its closure

.

According to a CTV British Columbia News report by Kent Molgat, the City of Vernon and the North Okanagan Regional District are hoping to replace the track with community sports facilities.

The track is operated by the volunteer group The Okanagan Equestrian Society.

“Everything that we make off the operations of the track seem to be funneled into this litigation to keep us alive,” said The Okanagan Equestrian Society president Ed Woolley, whose case to keep the track open will be heard in court next spring. “Hopefully it’s not a longshot. We like the odds.”

The land was originally donated to the local government for the thoroughbred racetrack.
