After breaking his left wrist for a second time in an accident on May 31 at Clinton Raceway, driver Don McElroy has told Trot Insider that he is waiting for his cast to be removed
and is in good spirits.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” said the 52-year-old resident of Ingersoll, Ont. “The arm aches away there every once in a while, but it's not hurting me bad. We’re just buying our time until we get the cast off and then hopefully it will be a couple weeks of therapy and we’ll get back at 'er. I don’t foresee any problems yet. Everything looks good so far.”
McElroy was thrown from his sulky when five-year-old trotter Thrill Lover made a break late in the stretch. He landed on his left wrist, which he had previously shattered in a spill at Grand River Raceway in 2005.
“Last time we had a lot of problems with it and they ended up having to fuse it and actually that’s where it broke this time, right where it had been fused. The surgeon said that’s the smallest part of the wrist and probably the weakest and I had to go out and break it there. It was a really bad break. I broke it right in half and the bone came right through the palm of my hand.”
After being taken to hospital in Clinton, McElroy was transported to St. Joseph’s in London for surgery.
“Surgery went fine. They put a plate in with eight screws and I got three pins in one knuckle. They’ll probably take the pins out when they take the cast off (on July 21).”
“As soon as I can feel good enough that I can get back out there, we’ll be back out there,” said the winner of 4,015 lifetime races and purses over $18.5 million. “I just want to thank everyone for all their help and all the good wishes.”
