Cool Jazz and Gussies Girl emerged victorious in both $20,000 divisions of the Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series for two-year-old fillies on Thursday night

at Mohawk Racetrack.

In the opening split, it was Cool Jazz scoring a gate-to-wire win for driver Randy Waples in 1:56.1. The daughter of Rocknroll Hanover-Cool Yankee shot straight to the front from the outside post in the six-horse field and then cruised to a four-and-three-quarter-length decision over Chocolate Truffle with Keystone Nell finishing third. Cool Jazz returned just $3.10 for the win.

It was the first win in two career tries for the filly who was a $47,000 purchase at last Fall’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale. Jason Libby does the training for owner Robert Leblanc of Ridgefield, CT.

In the second division, it was Gussies Girl making a quarter-pole move to command and then holding off a pair of late challengers to win for driver Mike Saftic in 1:57.1. The daughter of The Panderosa-Gussies Place used a :28.1 final quarter to fend off Cams Cupid and Shesapurty Lady for the narrow victory.

Just a $10,000 yearling purchase at Last Fall’s Harrisburg sale, Gussies Place is now one for two in her brief career for trainer John Pentland and owner Synerco Ventures Inc. of Toronto, Ontario. She kicked back $5.30 for the win.

The Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series will continue next Thursday night at Mohawk Racetrack
