After stringing together three consecutive second-place finishes at Rideau Carleton Raceway, Viper Select stepped up with a victory in Thursday’s $13,000 Preferred Handicap for driver Donald Jobin

.

The six-year-old son of Dauntless Bunny popped – or in his case, hopped – into the pocket spot while Ruthless Ace ripped through early panels of :26.3, :56.4 and 1:24.3. Heavy pressure was applied to the leader around the final turn, but a :27.4 final frame by Viper Select allowed him to surge to the top en route to holding on for a nose decision over runner-up Peenie in 1:52.3. Ruthless Ace held on bravely to finish a lapped-on third in the eight-horse tilt.

Viper Select, who is owned by Denis Guindon of Carleton Place, ON, has hit the board in five of six starts this season. The 21-time winner has managed to stash away in excess of $152,108.
