Western Silk may have ended her two-year-old season on a disappointing note, but that hasn’t stopped her from returning this year in very impressive fashion

as shown by Friday's performance in the $130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for three-year-old pacing fillies at Western Fair Raceway.

As the race unfolded, Doug McNair sent elimination winner Tiz To Dream hard after the lead from Post 7 and battled with Mother Hen and Jody Jamieson to obtain control by the :27 first quarter. Just past that point, Mark MacDonald and Western Silk came out from fifth on the rail, flushing out Dave Miller and Warm Waffles who provided perfect first over cover.

Tiz To Dream passed the half in :56.3 and by the 1:25 third panel she was head-to-head with Warm Waffles while Western Silk was swinging three-wide and swept by the leaders in the lane and pulled away to win by more than three lengths in 1:53.3. Elim winner Warm Waffles (Camluck) held for second while Mother Hen (Banner Yankee) was third.

“She’s been an awesome filly since day one, she’s been something unbelievable, she’s a creature. We had Chancey Lady, Moving Pictures, I had Yellow Diamond for a while, and I think this filly rates right up there. She’s a sweet filly,” said trainer Casie Coleman, who shares ownership of the $50,000 yearling purchase with Tom Hill of Lancashire, Great Britain.

It was the second win in as many starts for Western Silk, who won last week’s elimination by 13 lengths. The win put the Western Terror – Extemporaneous daughter’s 2010 bankroll at $85,000 and lifetime at $404,000.

Last year Western Silk won seven of 14 races, including three OSS Gold finals, but finished a disappointing ninth in her final start of the season, the $300,000 OSS Super Final. Her performance was attributed to sickness.
