Sophomores sparred in a total of five divisions for their respective opening legs of the Prospect Series at Flamboro Downs on Saturday night (May 20).

Acefortyfour Elvis won in the lone $8,600 division for three-year-old trotting colts. The odds-on Mike Timpano trainee spun his competition around the track through a clip of :28.1, :57.4 and 1:27 to bag a 2-1/2-length win in 1:57.3 over Impressive Dude. J Harris drove the gelded son of Il Sogno Dream to his fourth win. The gelding competes for owners Wendy Warren-Timpano and Denise Carr. He returned $3.80 to win.

Maple persevered through a parked mile to snag the first of two divisions for sophomore pacing fillies. Driver Daryl Thiessen raced wide from fourth with the daughter of Sportswriter and made steady gains off the pegs after pacesetter Prevail Seelster through fractions of :27.2, :57.1 and 1:26.1. Maple reeled in Prevail Seelster off the final turn and scooted to a length win in 1:57. Isaac Waxman conditions the two-time winner for owners Louis-Philippe Roy, Michel Letarte and Jean Allaire. She paid $5.50 to win.

The second division for pacing fillies was stolen in pillar-to-post fashion by 11-1 shot Dewitt This Moment. Driver Jason Ryan orchestrated the front-stepping thievery through a tempo of :28.1, :59 and 1:27.3 to hold by a head with the Control The Moment filly in a 1:57.1 mile. Paul Ritchie owns and trains the $24.30 winner who bagged her third victory.

Similar speed tactics scored It Takes Two an upset in the first division for pacing colts. The Scott McNiven trainee led to a :27.3 first quarter and fought first-over challenger Parsons through a :58 half and 1:27.1 three-quarters to fully repel his threat and win by a half length in 1:56.1. Lorne House piloted the $26.70 winner who won his fourth race and is a homebred for Kimberley McNiven and Donald Douglas.

Scribblers snagged the other division from off the speed as the 1-9 favourite in 1:56.1. Jason Ryan overcame a 10-length deficit to a :27 first quarter and gained on leader Briggs through a :57 half and 1:26.2 three-quarters to collar him in the stretch with the Paul Reid trainee and win by a half length. The Canam Crew owns the Sportswriter gelding who won his third race and paid $2.10 to win.
