A Sudden Twist established a new lifetime mark on Friday, May 1 at Flamboro Downs and in the process the Dave Menary-trained five-year-old gelding set a Canadian season’s record on a half-mile track with his 1:52.2 triumph.

Simon Allard tucked A Sudden Twist in behind the favoured J M Hannibal (J.R. Plante) in his Race 10 assignment, but the son of Carlsbad Cam refused to sit a pocket trip. After the :26.4 opening quarter, the 2-1 third choice sprung into action and pulled away from the pack by three and three-quarter lengths at the half in :55.

Down the backstretch, J M Hannibal moved within a length and a half of the front while A Sudden Twist rolled past three-quarters in 1:23 and then turned for home. Grissini (Paul Mackenzie) attempted to take all the glory as he squeezed up the inside, but A Sudden Twist finished strong winning in 1:52.2 by one length. The time of the mile was also one-fifth of a second off the North American season’s record.

Grissini was the runner-up while J M Hannibal finished third.

Owned by Phil Silvestri and Joseph Settimi of Hamilton, Ont., A Sudden Twist scored his third win of 2009 and 19th of his career pushing his total bankroll to $112,914.
