Trot Insider has learned that Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Mystic Mistress has been euthanized at the age of 25.

A daughter of Dexter Nukes - Pam Ryan, Mystic Mistress managed two wins from 12 lifetime starts on the racetrack while competing in the Ontario Sires Stakes against the likes of Elegant Killean, Nines Wild, Keyed Alike and Chelemark Lori. She was retired in 1995 and started a broodmare career for trainer Ed Howard and co-owner Bru Mar Rich Stables of Ottawa, Ont.

At the turn of the century, Mystic Mistress quickly established herself as one of harness racing's top broodmares. She produced the winners of more than $4.3 million, with seven winners of $100,000+ and three foals with records of 1:50 or faster.

Her top performer was Mystician, the 2010 Metro Pace champion and a winner of $1.94 million, followed by Camystic, a multiple stakes winner with more than $779,000 banked on the track. Both of those horses have moved on to stallion careers.

Other notable performers include multiple OSS winner Lucks Mistress ($616,605) and sub-1:50 winner Fenman ($387,956). Each of these performers were sired by Camluck.

Managed throughout her broodmare career by Warrawee Farm, Mystic Mistress received the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association’s award as Broodmare of the Year for 2011. She was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2012.

Hall of Famer Bill O'Donnell presents to Dr. Michael Wilson for Mystic Mistress

"Horse racing is like a lottery with a variably-priced ticket," said Dr. Michael Wilson of Warrawee Farm at her induction. "Mystic Mistress is like winning the lottery with a free ticket.

"Thank you to the Hall of Fame for recognizing Mystic Mistress."

Wilson told Trot Insider that Mystic Mistress had been retired from broodmare duty for a few years and was living out her retirement at his Rockwood, Ont. area farm. The difficult decision was made to euthanize Mystic Mistress on Tuesday (May 9) after showing an increased inability to stand after laying down.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Mystic Mistress.
