Dr. Roland ‘Roly’ Armitage was appointed to the Order of Ontario in a ceremony on Monday, April 25, receiving the province's highest honour for a lifetime of service to his community and country.
A decorated Second World War veteran, devoted veterinarian and published author, Dr. Roly Armitage served as mayor of West Carleton Township and is a dedicated leader in his community. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1999 for his efforts to advance the sport and improve track safety in Canada.
Armitage served as president of the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society from 1972 to 1974 and the Canadian Trotting Association from 1974 to 1980. He was also general manager of Rideau Carleton Raceway for nine years.
The 96-year-old Dunrobin, Ont. resident was among 22 new appointments to the 2019 Order of Ontario.
