While the world is doing what it can to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, officials in Thailand are in the midst of an action plan to try to get control of a deadly outbreak of African Horse Sickness, which has killed hundreds of horses this year and is threatening to claim the lives of all 11,800 equine in the country.

According to an article on NASDAQ.com, government started to vaccinate roughly 4,000 horses early this week in an effort to contain the virus, which is transmitted by insects and only affects equine.

Equine owners have been utilizing mosquito nets, conducting temperature checks and quarantining horses, while the government has banned the importing and exporting of equine in the country.

In regard to the virus, Aree Laikul, a veterinarian from Kasetsart University's faculty of Veterinary Medicine, has been quoted as saying, "Without any prevention, 10 out of 10 horses will contract the virus... nine out of 10 sick horses will die from it.”
