Things didn’t look so good for the backers of Shadywood Baron at the half in Monday’s $15,000 Preferred Pace at Western Fair Raceway

, but boy did they look good at the finish.

The eight-year-old son of Rambaran-Taylor Kate, who was last in the eight-horse affair heading into the final lap of the half-miler, used a solid kick in the final quarter to post a 9-1 upset for the tandem of driver Alfie Carroll, who enjoyed a three-win day at the office, and trainer James Ellis.

Shadywood Baron and Carroll watched Daddy Mac rip through fractions of :27.1, :57.2 and 1:27.2, but the leader succumbed to pressure in the late stages of the mile. Shadywood Baron rolled out three wide on the way to the three-quarter pole and he used a :30.2 final frame to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Donegal Gerald in 1:58.2. Pacesetting Daddy Mac had to settle for third prize.

The victory was the third of the season for the homebred, who is owned by Betty Ellis of Essex, ON. The 25-time winner bumped his career cash stash to $273,572 to date.
