Wagering reached new heights this week for the 2024 harness racing meet at Fraser Downs at Elements Casino Surrey with an uptick in handle over the last two race days that hasn't been seen in many years.

Dawn Lupul, Racing Manager and Communications at Fraser Downs, reported that the handle on Thursday, March 14 was $364,392, according to official CMPA data, with just nine races carded -- the highest for a single race card in six years at the Surrey, B.C. oval and only the second time wagering topped that level in more than 18 years. Only the March 2, 2018 card produced a higher handle in that period at $368,921, with 12 races that day for an average of $37,433. Last Thursday's average handle per race was $40,055, the highest since Dec. 26, 2005, which averaged $41,812 per race.

Wagering was also strong last Friday, March 15, totalling $352,861 for another nine races with an average per race handle of $39,206.

"We're witnessing an incredible surge in momentum at Fraser Downs racing," said Lupul. "There's a growing interest in our product and we're incredibly fortunate to have a vibrant community of horsepeople who consistently deliver exceptional performances. Fans are taking notice and it is drawing others too."

Lupul noted the 2024 racing season has been marked by remarkable achievements by some of the track's stars, including trainer Gord Abbott, who celebrated reaching a career milestone of 1,000 wins, and Dave Hudon, who achieved his 2,500th driving win. Additionally, horseman Kelly Hoerdt has recently made his triumphant return with a strong stable of horses under his care, adding to the excitement on the track.

Fraser Downs takes pride in offering one of the lowest takeout wagering profiles in North American harness racing. With Win, Place, Show, Double, Super Hi-5, Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 all set at the industry-low 15 per cent takeout rate, the track ensures great value for horseplayers. Moreover, the Pick 5 features a $1 minimum bet and the Double offers a unique $2 minimum bet, enhancing the potential for higher payouts and increased excitement for players.

Racing action continues every Thursday and Friday night at 7 p.m PST until May 3, 2024.
