Narcoleptic Mare Saved From Mud

A slew of responders recently had to do all they could to save a 27-year-old mare that found herself in four feet of mud after having succumbed to a bout of narcolepsy.

Chesire Fire and Rescue Service in England were called out to a ditch at a Tarvish farm earlier this month where they found Molly, the aged mare, in deep soft mud and unable to get herself out, according to an article by horsechannel.com.

Molly had suffered a bout of narcolepsy – a condition characterized by the extreme tendency to fall asleep – and found herself in the life-threatening predicament because of it.

A veterinarian sedated Molly before the rescue team rigged her with special equipment that allowed them to lift her out. A local farmer also used one of his diggers to create a ramp out of the ditch.

Molly apparently laid down as soon as she was saved due to exhaustion, but was back up on her feet roughly ten minutes later. Her owner reported that she was doing well after the rescue.
