Barona Ice Takes Western Pace

After getting picked off in the final strides and finishing second in last weekend’s Western Pace elimination for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings, Barona Ice returned to Northlands Park for this afternoon’s $100,000 final and turned a two-hole trip

into a major payday.

Bill Tainsh, Jr. mapped out the perfect trip for Barona Ice, who was afforded the luxury of shadowing pacesetter Clintons Escape through panels of :28.3, :57.3 and 1:25.4 before being asked to go to work.

When Tainsh called on the son of Freedoms Pass-Vanessa Hall the gelding summoned up a :28.4 final quarter to propel himself to the 1:54.4 score. Runner-up War Cry Ranger (Don Monkman, Jr.) came up a neck short, while Dees Promise (Kelly Hoerdt) was a half-length back in third.

Bred and owned by Barona Yearlings of Spruce Grove, AB, Barona Ice picked up his seventh win of the season in 17 attempts while pushing his lifetime earnings to $129,735.
