Elm Grove Mistress rode the pocket trip to victory in the $3,100 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Tuesday (Oct. 3) evening.

Jason Hughes and the Jennifer Doyle trainee followed pacesetter JM Sportsfan (Steven Shepherd) through panels in :29.2, :59 and 1:28 before tipping out to win in 1:56.3 by three-quarters of a length. Outrageous Style (Gilles Barrieau) was second and JM Sportsfan was third.

Danny Birt owns the eight-year-old Articulator mare, who recorded her seventh win of the year. Elm Grove Mistress paid $24.30 to win as the longest shot on the board.

In addition to Elm Grove Mistress, trainer Jennifer Doyle went back to Earnscliffe, P.E.I. with three wins, including Big Harry Matthews (Myles Heffernan Sr.) in 2:00.3 and Ladylike (Hughes) as a popular winner in 1:57.3. 

The ‘Maritime Magic Man’ was the star of the show on the special Tuesday evening program with four wins on the night.  New Brunswick driver Gilles Barrieau teamed up with Silver Spirit to win the opener in 1:56 from the Devon Wallace barn. Barrieau and Keeper Floored then took advantage of some confusion to get the jump on his foes in 1:56.2 for trainer Roger MacRae in race seven. Barrieau’s third win came in race 10 as Boundtopanout led all the way to win in 1:57.1 for trainer Ron Matheson then the four-bagger was completed with Ubettimagoodone in 1:57.4 for Jeff Lilley in race 12. 

Adam Merner scored a triple on the evening with Check Your Source winning from the Gordie Hennessey barn in 1:56.4 then the Melissa Rennie trained duo of Woodmere Rollily (1:56.4) and Rose Run Quest (1:57.1) swept the final two races of the night. 

David Dowling tripled up in the race bike with Fern Hill Hero (2:00.1) for trainer Earl Watts, Shes Rockandfame (1:58.4) for trainer Mike Dowling and Saulsbrook Feisty (1:58.1) from the Carrie Saunders stable.
