Two sophomore trotting colts, Daylon Magician and Dejarmbro, and a surprise entry from mare trotter Frenchfrysnvinegar, were the three supplements to the Breeders Crown year-end championship races
today at the Mohawk race office. The $6 million Breeders Crown events will be contested on Saturday, October 29, at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada.
With the three-year-old colt trot division still seeking a leader, Ontario sensation Daylon Magician was an expected supplement, despite his upset in the Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series final this past Saturday. Daylon Magician ran up a seven-race streak prior to his runner-up position to Delcrest Julian, but owners Dave and Mary Lemon were willing to pony up the $62,500 supplemental fee to enter the Crown at their home track.
Purple Haze Stable’s Dejarmbro will be looking to exact a measure of revenge on Manofmanymissions. Last year Dejarmbro won his Breeders Crown elimination at Pocono Downs, but broke stride as the favorite in the final. The race was won by Manofmanymissions, a Crown eligible colt looking to put the seal on a season that has seen victories in the Colonial Trot and Kentucky Futurity. The two colts most recently faced each other in the Futurity race-off, with Manofmanymissions emerging the best by three-quarters of a length. The supplements will boost the purse of the Breeders Crown three-year-old colt trot to $610,000.
Frenchfrysnvinegar, a six-year-old daughter of Angus Hall with $439,806 in earnings, was the only other supplement, with owner David Smith paying $31,250 to race in the Breeders Crown Mare Trot, now worth $276,250. Trainer Jeff Gillis saw the move as a calculated gamble.
“Hopefully it’s a wise move,” said Gillis. “It’s a big gamble but there’s a lot involved here – prestige and the purse is part of it. She was racing earlier in the year against San Pail and the likes of them. She’s no match for them but I think she can stay with the girls. It’s our home track, and Woodbine is made for speed, which she can handle. If Buck I St Pat was on top form I wouldn’t even consider it, but I figure in an eight horse field there is no bad post at Woodbine.”
Regular entries for eligible trotters and pacers are due by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mohawk race office. There are no supplemental provisions for two-year-old races.
The finalists for the 12 Breeders Crown Finals will be determined through elimination races this Friday and Saturday night at Woodbine. Eliminations for all two-year-olds will be raced on Friday [post time 7:30 p.m.] and eliminations for all three-year-olds and up will be Saturday [post time 7:30 p.m.]. Elimination winners may pick their post position for the finals.
Harness racing's $6 million divisional championships finals are scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at Woodbine Racetrack. Special post time is 6:30 p.m.
