“(Scott) has been pounding the pavement pretty hard the last couple of years. He’s really put his nose to the grindstone, but you have to have talent, too. You can work hard all day but you’ll just go around in circles.”

The above quote comes courtesy of veteran horseman Rick Zeron, in reference of his son, Scott, who has also thrust himself onto the national driving scene in the past couple of years. Both Zerons are up for year-end honours at Standardbred Canada's annual O'Brien Award Ceremony, set to take place at the Delta Meadowvale in Mississauga, Ont. on January 29.

In a preview of the O'Briens, insidehalton.com has profiled both Rick and Scott, who are looking to exit the awards night with some hardware under their belts. Rick is a finalist in the Horsemanship category, while Scott could take home driver-of-the-year honours.

“That would be absolutely amazing,” Scott was quoted as saying, in regard to the possibility of snaring the award. “It’s the biggest honour, just to be nominated with someone like Randy Waples (who has twice been named Canada's driver of the year).”

“We’ll cross our fingers,” Rick said. “It would be very gratifying. It would be so nice for Scott to get it — he’s worked his ass off. And if we both get it, it would be a real bonus.”
