Kent Baker Passes

Longtime Standardbred racing participant Kent Russell Baker of Phelpston, Ont. passed away on Friday, April 7 at the age of 80.

Kent was adventurous, loved snowmobiling, boating, his cottages on the lake and his passion for horses – he was a talented and successful Standardbred horse trainer, owner and breeder in Ontario. Kent, whose stable included the tough millionaire Open trotter Armbro Chronicle, also held the position of Vice President and Director for the Ontario Harness Horse Association (OHHA) and continuously spoke out to promote Standardbred horse racing.

Kent loved driving and many times would drive to the races rather than fly. During his later years, he loved driving across Canada and into the U.S.

Born in Collingwood, Ont. to the late Russell and Eleanor Baker. Kent is survived by his wife of 59 years Ann, and his children Shelly (Andrew) and Rick. Kent was a proud grandfather to Taylor, Tylor and Nicholas, and great grandfather to James and Brantley. Kent will be held dear in the heart of his sister Nancy.

Kent will be remembered by his many nieces and nephews, his brothers- and sisters-in-law and his many friends and business associates for his love of life, loyalty and generosity.

Kent will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will take place at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home - Stayner Chapel, 7313 Highway 26, Stayner, ON, on Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in private with family members only. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Kent may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
