Rey Family Sweeps Manitoba Stakes

The Rey family teamed up to sweep a pair of $4,102 Silk Lace splits for three-year-old Manitoba bred pacing fillies on Saturday at Holland Fair

The Richard Rey-trained Dougies Deal and driver Michel Rey advanced first over from fourth after the opening quarter mark and collared pacesetter Necedah in the stretch. The daughter of Dealer Takes All-R B Precious reached the wire in 2:05.3, winning by a length over the pocket-sitter Giggitygiggitygoo (Greg Manning). Favourite Necedah, trained and driven by Roland Rey, finished two lengths behind in third.

Dougies Deal paid $9 to win as the 7-2 third choice. Janet Rey owns and bred the maiden-breaking filly, who was making her third career start.

Some Beach Gal and Roland Rey converted from the pocket in the second split and nosed out first over attacker Miss Tinkerbelle (Richard Remillard) for the 2:05.1 victory. Race leader J Rs Delight, driven by Dean Rey for Roland Rey, settled for third one and a half lengths behind.

Some Beach Gal returned $2.90 to her backers as the popular choice in the field. Roland Rey owns, trains and bred the daughter of Abbatom-Astra Cam, a winner of two consecutive races in three lifetime starts.

Saturday's harness racing card also featured one $7,169 Golden Boy Stake division for three-year-old Manitoba bred pacing colts, which was also won by the Rey family.

Trainer-driver Dean Rey sent Kaanabba, the longest shot on the board at odds of 15-1, down the road to win in 2:02.4 by two and three-quarter lengths. Favourite My Friend Don (Darryl Mason) advanced first over to finish second and Inono (George Isman) was third, nearly seven lengths back.

Kaanabba paid $32.60 for the upset. Dean Rey co-owns the son of Abbatom-Kaanapali Beach with Jennifer Rey. The win was the colt's first in three lifetime starts.
