Stage Set For 2023 OSS Super Finals

Woodbine Mohawk Park will feature the finale of the 2023 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) program, hosting the eight Super Finals for the provincial program's brightest stars over two nights on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14.

A total of $2.4 million in purses will be up for grabs as top trotters and pacers from the Gold level of the provincial program face off at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.

Here's a preview of what fans can look forward to this weekend.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Filly Trot - Friday, Oct. 13 

Willys Home Run will look to complete the OSS sweep in the Super Final for freshman trotting fillies. All five seasonal victories for the daughter of Archangel-Rite Outa The Park have come in OSS action. Yet to miss the board in her young career, the Kyle Fellows trainee also sports a runner-up finish in the Peaceful Way Stakes on the way to banking $373,935 on the year. Regular reinsman James MacDonald is listed to drive on Friday night and will have to overcame the outside post 10, a feat she has accomplished in Gold action once before.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Colt Trot - Friday, Oct. 13 

Myretirementdream leads what has proven to be a wide open bunch in the two-year-old trotting colts division with three colts picking up two OSS wins along the road to the final. The son of Il Sogno Dream-Myretirementticket enters off his third win in seven starts in 2023, a 1:55 win at Mohawk in OSS Gold action for trainer Eli Wagler. Regular reinsman Jody Jamieson gets the assignment, leaving from the outside 10-hole.

One slot to his inside, Griff will look to stay perfect in OSS action, sporting a two-for-two record in preliminary Gold legs including a 1:54.1 victory in his last effort at Mohawk. Putting up a record of 6-3-0-0 on the season, the gelded son of Muscle Mass-Renegade Magic has banked $155,700 for trainer Murray Brethour. Louis-Philippe Roy picks up the catch-drive.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Filly Pace - Friday, Oct. 13 

Pass Line will look to put a bow on a dominant OSS campaign for the two-year-old pacing fillies. Riding a four-race win streak into the final, Pass Line has notched victories in eight of 10 starts in 2023 for trainer David Menary. The daughter of All Bets Off-Breakheart Pass is a homebred for the Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC and is co-owned along with Frank Baldachino. Driver Yannick Gingras will be in town and will look to guide the Champlain champion to victory from post seven. Her main rival is stablemate Its A Love Thing, and the 2023 Shes A Great Lady winner leaves from post two for driver James MacDonald.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Colt Pace - Friday, Oct. 13 

The points-leading Funtime Bayama enters the OSS Super Final red-hot, riding a four race win-streak including a Canadian record mile for two-year-old pacing geldings on a half-mile track in the OSS Gold finale at Flamboro Downs, pacing in 1:52.4.The Richard Moreau-trained son of Hes Watching-Tymal Sugrbabydoll touts a record of 6-4-2-0 for his freshman campaign, banking $212,880 on the year. Regular pilot Sylvain Filion will be in the bike from post one.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Filly Trot - Saturday, Oct. 14

Two-year-old filly champion Righteous Resolve will look to add her second OSS title to her impressive resume. James MacDonald will be aboard as the daughter of Resolve-Motown Muscle enters off of a 1:52 victory in the final OSS leg at Woodbine Mohawk following a narrow miss in the Elegantimage Stakes. Trained by Matt Bax, Righteous Resolve has yet to miss the board in 2023 in 10 starts, picking up three victories and sporting a career bankroll of $1,018,218. She drew the inside post for Saturday's first Super Final.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Colt Trot - Saturday, Oct. 14

Ghostly Casper and Hasty Bid enter the three-year-old colt and gelding trot atop the division. Ghostly Casper enters as the points leader, sporting a record of 2-2-1 through five OSS starts. Trained by Ben Baillargeon, the son of Resolve-Cool Creek Breeze is a three-time winner in 2023, hitting the board in eight of 15 while earning more than a quarter-million dollars this season. He has drawn post four and will have Tyler Borth in the bike.

Hasty Bid enters the Super Final hot on the heels of Ghostly Casper in the points. The Paige Austin trainee enters off of a 1:53.3 victory in the final leg of OSS Gold action at Mohawk, giving the gelded son of My MVP-Sunshinenlollipops his second victory of the year in 11 seasonal outings. Regular reinsman James MacDonald will drive from post seven.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Filly Pace - Saturday, Oct. 14

Trainer Ken Sucee will send the points-leading One Last Wish into the sophomore filly pace. The daughter of of Bettors Delight-Arts Diva has visited the winner's circle in five of 15 starts in 2023, three of which coming in OSS Gold action. Driven by Paul MacDonell, One Last Wish has banked $297,802 for her career and scored last two-back with a 1:51.1 win at Mohawk in the OSS Gold finale. She has drawn post position four for the Super Final.

$300,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Colt Pace - Saturday, Oct. 14

Stockade Seelster will look to defend his two-year-old title with a victory in the three-year-old colt pace. Entering atop the points standings for Dr. Ian Moore, the son of State Treasurer-Soiree Seelster has been a winner in six of 13 in 2023, hitting the board in 10 of those outings. He will leave from the outside post in a field of eight with regular driver Jody Jamieson.

There are more sires stakes finals this week than any other week in 2023, probably because The Breeders Crown Eliminations are next weekend. Besides Mohawk, the following US states are all holding sires stake finals this week:
Delaware - at Harrington, 2yo's, all week long
Ohio - at Northfield Park, aged pacers and trotters, Saturday
Maryland - at Rosecroft Raceway, 2yo's, Thursday
Maine - at Bangor, 3yo's, Saturday
Illinois - at Hawthorne, all ages, Saturday
Indiana - at Hoosier Park, 2yoct's and 2yoft's, Thursday, everything else on Friday
