Teesha Symes was honoured with the Outstanding Groom Award at this past Saturday's O'Brien Awards, and as the old adage goes good news travels fast.

Symes was recently profiled by the local media close to her Nova Scotia hometown of Springhill, N.S. where her parents Chuck and Shirley still reside.

“I’m third generation, my dad’s dad had horses and dad had horses. When we were coming home from the hospital when I was a newborn we stopped at the barn. My mother wasn’t too happy about it,” Symes told the Amherst News. “It’s a big part of my life.”

Symes, 27, and now of Cambridge, Ont., was recognized with the Outstanding Groom Award for 2016. Symes has worked for O’Brien Award winner Dr. Ian Moore for the last decade, and full-time since 2012. Symes cared for State Treasurer, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2015, throughout his racing career. In addition to State Treasurer, Symes went on the road to care for Rockin In Heaven the past two years and also cared for many of the Moore Stables’ two-year-olds.

“It’s pretty neat to get that recognition, I’m absolutely honoured,” Symes said. “In one race card in a day there’s 12 races and in each race there are eight horses. Every horse has a different caretaker and that’s just one track in Canada. If you put all the tracks in Canada together it’s a lot of caretakers.”
