Spencer Adds Another Title

If someone referred to Kelly Spencer as a ‘Jack of all Trades,’ they wouldn’t be far off, if at all. Spencer has been knocking it out of the park in the harness racing industry for years now, whether it’s behind a telephoto lens, in the centre of a marketing strategy, or on either side of a video camera. It has now been announced that Spencer has added a new position to her portfolio, as you will now be able to find her at the front of the class, so to speak.

Officials with the University of Guelph have announced via social media that Spencer, who is Grand River Raceway’s manager of marketing and communications, has joined the university’s ‘Equine Science Certificate’ program as its professor for marketing and communications in the equine industry.

The equine online courses at the University of Guelph offer a comprehensive course of online study for the horse enthusiast and owner. The continuing education program is based on research and evidence-based knowledge providing horse owners with practical information to improve the health and welfare of horses. Courses are offered on a rotating basis in January, May and September each year.

"I’m tremendously excited to be part of the University Of Guelph’s Equine Business Management program," Spencer told Trot Insider. "The team behind these programs, and the larger operation, offer world-class learning. Their efforts reap big rewards for all of us in the equine industry, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to participate at this level."

Spencer also explained that the opportunity with the University of Guelph is part-time, and solely for the upcoming winter semester, so there won’t be any changes to her role at Grand River.

In addition to helming Grand River Raceway’s marketing endeavours – which includes hosting the popular ‘tarmac show’ at the Elora, Ont. track – Spencer is also the owner-operator of Iron Horse Photo, the recognized photography company that has made its name well known for professional finish line and winner’s circle photos in southern Ontario. Spencer also provides marketing consultation services, which have come after having spent two decades in the business.

In part, U of G’s social media announcement regarding Spencer’s addition stated that, “With more than 20 years of experience in crafting audience engagement in the horse racing industry in Ontario, Kelly understands that commitment to thoughtful, creative, authentic and consistent marketing efforts is vital for every business.”

The program’s upcoming Winter 2017 semester is set to kick off on Monday, January 16 and is scheduled to culminate on Sunday, April 9. For more information, click here.
