City Of London Trotting Series Underway

The City Of London Series for trotters kicked off on Friday night at Western Fair Raceway with a three splits for colts and geldings and a quartet of divisions for the ladies

M T L Maple extended his win streak to seven in the first $9,000 division for the boys. Mike Whelan rolled the homebred sophomore son of Malabar Maple to victory in 2:03.1 in wire-to-wire fashion. Walter Whelan of Dundas, Ont. owns the winner of $31,820, who has won seven of eight starts in his debut season.

Piracy worked a pocket trip into a maiden-braking score in the fastest colt division with Stephen Davis in the bike. The Mike Keeling pupil prevailed by half a length over the pacesetter, Gallant Rooney (Peter Core) in 2:02. Piracy, a three-year-old son of Mutineer, lifted his bankroll to $12,536 with the win for the Wellwood Stables and P C Wellwood Enterprises Inc. of Cambridge, Ont.

Striking Fury and Per Henrikson survived a first-over journey to take the final male division in 2:03 by three and three-quarter lengths. Ann Karin Larson trains and co-owns the three-year-old son of Striking Sahbra with Odd Larsen of Joakobsli, Norway and Tor Jan Larsen of Norwood, Ont. Striking Fury, who is two for four this year, has won half of his six career starts earning $13,860.

Siena Belle proved to be the fastest filly of the night winning her division in 2:00.3 off a perfect pocket trip. The three-year-old daughter of Angus Hall scored her first lifetime win with Trevor Henry in the bike for trainer Dan Creighton. Richard Keys of Chicago, Illinois owns the winner of $19,628.

Windsong Felicity also used a pocket trip to take her split in 2:01.3 for trainer/driver Glen Hardy. The homebred three-year-old daughter of Via Blaze scored her second win in four starts and bumped her winnings to $10,500 for local owner Bill Loyens.

Justa Dreamer, a Berndt Hanover filly driven by David Wall, pulled off a mild 6-1 upset in her split when she prevailed by a neck in 2:03.3 Brian Hodgson trains and owns the winner of three races in 12 career starts and $15,074 with David Beaumont of Delaware and Elinor Haskell of St. Thomas, Ont.

Driven by Ross Battin, Lexis Ebba used front-end tactics to win her division in 2:04 for trainer Paul Ruhl and owner James Ruhl of Tara, Ont. The three-year-old Amigo Hall miss notched her second win in seven outings pushing her earnings to $22,480.

The second leg of the series is scheduled next Friday, June 12, 2009 with $9,000 divisions and the $40,000 (added) finals will take place the following Friday, June 19, 2009.
