Callahan Wins Five On Fundraiser Day

Winter Night overtook We The People to win the featured $18,500 3,4&5-Year-Old Pace, one of five wins for meet leading driver Corey Callahan on “Harness A Cure Day,” a fund-raiser for cancer research at Dover Downs

.

One of only two three-year-olds in the feature race, Winter Night ($5.60) continued his early season success racking up his fourth win in seven races, all with in-the-money finishes, as Callahan drove a come-from-behind 1:53.1 victory. Susan Ehlers and trainer Jason Skinner own the Western Terror-Hot Grin gelding. We The People and George Dennis were second while Whirl Monroe and Montrell Teague finished third. Jokin Man was scratched reducing the field to eight starters.

Callahan also scored with Chris Short trainee Phranque ($8.80), Hoof It N ($2.40) for conditioner Wayne Givens, Townline Christie ($20) for Gary Simpson, and the Dylan Davis-trained Hoorayforthegray ($7.60).

Following the races, a large group of Harness A Cure supporters, including a contingent of Dover Downs horsemen, went on a five-eighths mile walk around the Dover Down racing oval. Group leader, longtime harness-horseman Bobby Kinsey Sr., a cancer survivor, was first to finish.

“I wasn’t going to let anyone beat me,” said Kinsey. “I've been practicing.”

Custard The Dragon, one of last season’s top sophomore pacers, makes his four-year-old debut in the $36,000 Preferred Handicap taking on seven seasoned performers led by Nova Artist, Delivered From Zin and Ise The By Boy.

Monday through Thursday racing begins at 4:30 p.m. There is no live racing on both Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday post time is 1 p.m.
