Anellino Guglielmi, also known as Nello within the racing community, has been selected to represent Canada in the 2024 World Amateur Driving Championship in Finland, taking place this August.

World Amateur Driving Championship races will take place on Monday, Aug. 19, Tuesday, Aug. 20 and Thursday, Aug. 22, with the ceremony banquet to follow on Thursday, Aug. 22.

The Canadian representative was chosen based on specific criteria. To qualify, the driver needed to hold valid and in-good-standing licenses from both Standardbred Canada and their respective province. The driver had to have a minimum of 25 pari-mutuel wins. Also, they must have maintained an amateur driving status for the preceding 10 years, which allows the driver to drive their own horses, participate in amateur races where drivers' fees are contributed to registered charities, or drive for others while donating their fees to charity.

Expressing his excitement for the upcoming championship, Guglielmi remarked that, "The opportunity to represent Canada in Finland is truly an honour. It's a chance to experience something extraordinary and connect with fellow racing enthusiasts from around the world."

Reflecting on his 20 seasons competing as a driver, Nello shared, "Growing up, racing was more of a hobby than a career aspiration for me. But as life unfolded, my love for the sport only grew stronger."

On race nights, Nello’s father, Giovanni Guglielmi, can often be found paddocking for him.

The Melancthon, Ont. horseman’s passion for harness racing extends beyond the racetrack. He is deeply committed to giving back to the racing community such as volunteering with programs like "Wanna Ride.”

As Guglielmi gears up for the championship, he remains focused on enjoying life's journey and cherishing every moment.

"Amid life's challenges, it's essential to pause, take a breath and appreciate the beauty around us," Nello emphasized. "I'm grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to making Canada proud on the international stage."
