Hanover Shoe Farms has reported that champion racehorse and Hall of Fame sire Cantab Hall was humanely euthanized on Monday morning (Jan. 23), at the age of 22, due to arthritic disabilities.

During his racing career, Cantab Hall earned honours as the 2003 Dan Patch Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year and Trotter of the Year, earning $461,337 by winning 10 races in 10 starts including the Breeders Crown. 

As a three-year-old, he earned $1,062,968 finishing in the top three 11 times in 13 starts, with his lifetime record of 1:54 taken at The Meadowlands when winning a division of the Dickerson and then an elimination of the Stanley Dancer. He was also victorious in the $250,000 American National and a Canadian Trotting Classic elimination before finishing second in the final.

As a sire, Cantab Hall’s lifetime progeny earnings total $116,926,333 to date. He sired 11 millionaires including Father Patrick 3,1:50.2f ($2,600,571); Crystal Fashion 4,1:50 ($2,318,776); Wild Honey 3,1:50.4 ($1,687,588); Explosive Matter 3,1:52.3 ($1,528,266); Mets Hall 3,1:51.2 ($1,349,176); Uncle Peter 4,1:50.3f ($1,294,413); and Lifetime Pursuit 3,1:50.4 ($1,074,358).

As a broodmare sire, his daughters have produced the likes of Atlanta 6,1:49 ($3,805,259); Manchego 4,1:49 ($3,279,400); Ariana G 4,1:50.2 ($2,600,995); Southwind Frank 3,1:52.1 ($2,115,999); Six Pack 3,1:49.1 ($1,973,661); Jujubee 3,1:49.3 ($1,173,318), Jiggy Jog S 3,1:50 ($1,250,293); and Temporal Hanover 3,1:52.2s ($991,847).

In 2018, Cantab Hall was inducted into the U.S. Harness Racing Living Hall of Fame as a stallion.

Cantab Hall was a tough horse that commanded respect on the track and in the breeding shed. He was enjoying his last years in retirement at Hanover Shoe Farms in his paddock next to fellow retiree Andover Hall. He will be missed by those that worked with him.
