Walner Share Tops Harrisburg Mixed Opener

Walner

A share of trotting stallion Walner has fetched the highest price of all sales after four sessions of the 2022 Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Pa.

The mixed portion of the five-day sale kicked off on Thursday (Nov. 10) with a session focused on stallion shares, broodmares and broodmare prospects. The leading sire of trotting two-year-olds this year is Walner, and a rare opportunity to purchase a share in the son of Chapter Seven was made available during the Thursday session.

After the dust settled, Patty Key of Leechburg, Pa. secured the Walner share, consigned by Preferred Equine and sold as Hip 1052, for $750,000. According to the catalogue, the share was not subject to the right of first refusal from current syndicate members.

In addition to the stallion shares offered, one successful trotting stallion was fully and completely made available for sale four hips later. Southwind Frank was consigned to the sale by Diamond Creek, and the son of Muscle Hill - Flawless Lindy was purchased by his former trainer — Ron Burke, through his Burke Racing Stable LLC, for $215,000.

On the broodmare side, I D Diana No was purchased by Euro Stall SE of Berlin, Ohio for $225,000 to top the sales ledger. Preferred Equine consigned the five-year-old daughter of Andover Hall - Irenes Lucky Lady, selling as Hip 1200, a three-quarter sister to the dam of millionaire and world champion Plunge Blue Chip (1:49.4 - $1.5 million).

Preferred also consigned Hip 1102 Honor Thy Daughter, a producer of three in 1:56 from her first four foals. The daughter of Donato Hanover - Honorable Daughter was selling in foal to Muscle Hill, making the resulting foal a full brother or sister to the dam of standout 2022 Breeders crown winner Special Way (1:52.2 - $806,850). She was collared by Kentuckiana Farms for $205,000.

Supplemental broodmare entry Unexpected Gift rounded out the top five sales from Thursday, also fetching more than $200,000 in the sales ring. A half sister to millionaire and world champion Spider Blue Chip (1:51.3 - $1.2 million), four-year-old Unexpected Gift (Cantab Hall - Southwind Caitlin) sold as Hip 1624 in foal to Walner. Crawford Farms obtained the mare from the Preferred consignment for $205,000.

All told, 273 horses or shares were sold on Thursday with total sales topping $10.1 million.

The fifth and final session gets underway at 11 a.m. (EST) on Friday (Nov. 11) and features Hips 1300-1553 plus 1650-1655 as supplemental entries.
