"Our Partner Is No Good For Us"

While his focus is on winning this Saturday's National Driving Championship in Charlottetown, P.E.I., Dave Hudon's thoughts on the state of harness racing in his home province clearly mirror the intensity he'll show his seven NDC rivals.

"Last year when the government took over, we were allotted 10 months of racing and things were good, even if we went two days a week," said Hudon, "and now someone has put in the government's head, along with Great Canadian - which is far as I'm concerned is no good, our partner is no good for us - that overlap racing doesn't work...and we beg to differ."

Hudon would like to see both breeds working for the good of horse racing in British Columbia. "I think that if we want to do anything in Vancouver we have to get together."

Despite not driving on a half-mile track since Fraser Downs was reconfigured, he doesn't feel he'll be out of place over the four turns in Charlottetown for the National Driving Championship this Saturday. Hudon and Trot Radio's Norm Borg agree on how the style of racing at Fraser isn't that much different from a typical half-mile oval.

"We've gotta leave so hard, and then we leave into a half-mile turn because when they made it from a half-mile to a five-eighths track they made one turn bigger but they could never doctor the turn we leave into."
