Stud Setback For Fool Me Once

The first season at stud for millionaire pacer Fool Me Once has been put on hold after the stallion was forced to undergo emergency surgery.

According to a release from Hagemeyer Farms, breeding season for Fool Me Once has been paused as the son of Art Major - Fool That I Am recovers from emergency colic surgery.

"Late Friday (March 19) night, Fool Me Once was observed in the stallion barn at Hagemeyer Farms with severe colic symptoms," said the farm's statement. "Thanks to quick action by Dr. Jennifer Smith, with the assistance of soon to be Equine Veterinarian Lyndsay Hagemeyer, he received emergency care at the farm. He was transported to The Ohio State University Galbreath Equine Center for further evaluation where he received emergency colic surgery to correct a Nephrosplenic Entrapment.

"Many thanks to the quick and thorough action of the Veterinary Staff and Clinicians at OSU."

The farm indicated that Fool Me Once is expected to make a full recovery, although the timing for that full recovery is yet to be determined.

"There is certainly a good chance he may be able to finish the 2021 breeding season on a strong note. His long-term health is our primary goal at this time and we look forward to a successful return to breeding in 2022. Fool Me Once is standing his first season at stud. With his quality pedigree, early speed and successful racing career, he was drawing a lot of attention to Ohio breeders.

"Hagemeyer Farms would like to extend our appreciation to breeders that were supporting Fool Me Once this season. We share in the disappointment of this setback."

Fool Me Once was slated to stand his first season at stud for a fee of $3,000. Broodmare owners with mares booked to or considering booking to Fool Me Once are asked to contact Farm Owner/Manager Scott Hagemeyer at 513.304.9263.
