Stayon Purpose Passes

Trot Insider learned that multiple stakes winner and broodmare Stayon Purpose passed on Wednesday (Aug. 14) at the age of 32.

A daughter of Sonsam, Stayon Purpose was victorious in eight of her 20 career races, including divisions of the NJSS, Trillium, Champlain and Harvest Stakes as a freshman for trainer Rene Laarman.

After her racing career was cut short in the fall of her three-year-old season, Stayon Purpose enjoyed a long career as a broodmare, producing nine foals — six of which made it to the winner's circle.

Stayon Purpose's second foal, Ryans M Hope, won 17 races in his career and took a 1:53.4 mark at Woodbine. She produced a stakes winner in Blue Hot Poker, who captured an Ontario Sires Stakes event at Clinton Raceway in 2002 among his 16 career wins. Blue Hot Poker exceeded the $100,000 plateau in career earnings and took a mark of 1:54 at Hiawatha.

The last of her nine foals — Duckys Diva — was named in honour of Stayon Purpose's barn name: "Ducky," so given because "she used to love slapping at puddles," said co-owner Geoff Maltby. After being barren in both the 2007 and 2008 breeding seasons, Stayon Purpose was retired to pasture by the Maltbys.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Stayon Purpose.
