Enjoy The Caviar started his career at age five with an impressive nine-win streak and after taking some time off this winter the gelded son of SJs Caviar is

ready to qualify.

“I’m going to qualify him this Friday at Mohawk,” trainer and co-owner Joanne Dawson told Trot Insider. “He trained down well so hopefully we’re ready to race.”

The six-year-old trotter, who raced predominately on the WEG circuit last year, won nine out of 10 races earning $80,000 and took a mark of 1:54. On November 16, however, Enjoy The Caviar suffered a minor setback before his race at Woodbine.

“He had gone out across the thoroughbred track onto the standardbred track and there was a bad dip there and he tripped and that’s when he fell and opened up his knees and we had to scratch him that night,” said Dawson. “Then we came back and raced him one start after that [on December 8] and he wasn’t right so we laid him up then for the winter months.”

Dawson says Enjoy The Caviar, who is also owned by Holly Carr of Utopia, Ont., hibernated in Stayner, Ont. before starting back with some light jogging. Once the weather broke, the training commenced and now that the tracks are good, Enjoy The Caviar is ready to step back into the spotlight.

“He gave it his all [last year] and that seems to be the way he’s training back here again.

“He seems good now. He’s all healed and he trained back very, very well. We’re hoping that Friday’s a good day for weather and he should be good to go.”

Enjoy The Caviar, who will retain the services of driver Mike Saftic, is paid into the Frank Ryan and the Allerage in the fall.

“Up until then we’re just going to condition race him because he still fits the lower end conditions and hopefully we can come back as good as we were.”

While the bay’s feet were a concern last year, Dawson says he has overcome that issue. “The time off has just done him a world of wonders.”
